Dissolution of My Self Walkthrough
A spoiler-aware route through the rented room, not a fake true-ending chart.
This walkthrough is for players who already know the click-and-forget loop from how to play and now want a route that does not pretend Dissolution of My Self is a branching VN with a secret good ending. Pop Elephant Studio’s own FAQ is blunt: exploration order and the pill choice change order, pacing, and presentation. They do not change the ending. Plan your run as a reading, not as a routing puzzle.
The developers also asked people to mark story spoilers and to hold full playthrough uploads until about September 17, 2026. This page stays on systems, room logic, and decision points. If you want names and quotes, read Hector and Matvey. If you want a click checklist, use room objects plus the memory order planner.
Recommended first-run policy
Play the room in whatever order your eye lands on, with two exceptions:
- Decide pills early. “Take pills on time” and “Give up treatment” are both Steam achievements. They are also the cleanest presentation fork. See pills and choices before the bottle becomes just another blurred prop.
- Do not save-scum the first memory. The whole point is that Hector’s voice depends on what he has already discarded. Reloading the first click to “optimize” will teach you the interface and starve you of the intended drift.
A first run should last about 3–4 hours if you read at a normal pace. Fast readers finish sooner. The demo is a 30–50 minute slice; if you are still on the free build, the demo guide tells you what is missing.
Phase 1 — learn the blur rule
Start with a large, obvious hotspot: the window or a piece of furniture. Trigger the memory, then look at the object again. It should begin to lose function. That is your tutorial, even if the UI never uses the word tutorial. Demo patch notes added clearer operation guides and mini-game hints because testers missed this.
While the first layer is still readable, open settings and confirm:
- Language (English / Japanese / Simplified Chinese text).
- Text speed.
- Character voice volume and voice replay.
- A working mouse. Passport-style documents can demand a long press plus scroll.
If a hotspot does nothing, check three things in order: gesture, already-blurred state, then build version. Demo changelog lists stuck drag/wipe/hold bugs and save-load issues from the Next Fest period.
Phase 2 — empty the public room
Work around the apartment in a circle so you do not skip a wall:
- Window. Official copy uses it as the image of a daily life Hector cannot join. Language barrier plus disability plus exile are why he is stuck inside.
- Television. It plays programs he cannot understand. Clicking it is not a channel-surfing mini-game in the conventional sense; it is evidence of being stranded in a country whose media is noise.
- Dining chairs and table. Shared meals are where caretaker and charge, uncle and nephew, servant and sovereign collapse into one awkward seating chart. Matvey occupies all of those jobs at once.
- Medicine bottles. This is the pill fork. Do not treat it as loot. Treat it as a presentation switch. Achievements exist for taking pills on time and for giving up treatment.
- Papers, passport, and similar documents. These are where players report gesture trouble. Slow down. Hold. Scroll. Use a mouse.
You do not need a canonical sequence. You need coverage. Tick items on room objects as they fade so you know what is left to spend.
Phase 3 — survive the mini-games without rage-quitting
The demo added extra guidance for mini-games after Steam Next Fest. That is your hint that they are easy to misread, not that they are Dark Souls. When a gesture puzzle appears:
- Read the on-screen prompt twice.
- Switch to a mouse if you have not already.
- Try drag, wipe, and hold as distinct verbs. Version 1.1.3 treated them as separate failure points.
- If Save/Load/Settings look clickable during a line of dialogue, you are probably on an old build.
Getting stuck here is the most common “is this game broken?” moment. It is usually input. It is rarely a hidden key item from another room, because there is no other room in the exploratory sense. The world is this apartment plus memories.
Phase 4 — watch the layers peel
Demo 1.0.8 added room text changes for each layer. As objects leave, the remaining copy in the apartment should feel less like a lived-in rental and more like a stage that has lost props. That is the walkthrough’s only “boss phase”: keep clicking until Hector has nothing left he is willing to maintain.
Do not expect a combat climax. The Before You Buy FAQ says there are no monsters or jumpscares. The ending you are walking toward is the act of dissolving a person with your hands, which is also how the developers describe the game in one sentence.
If you want a more directed second run, pick the opposite pill choice and reverse your first-run click order (window last instead of first, documents first instead of last). You will not get a new finale. You will hear different timing, which is the actual replay value. Endings explains that without reciting the last scene.
Phase 5 — cleanup
After the credits:
- Check achievements. Ten badges exist; several are hidden by name until you earn them.
- Skim launch notes if you bought during the discount window and want the exact release times.
- Use review only if you are writing your own Steam post and want a tone check that is not a plot dump.
A walkthrough that promised three endings would be lying. A walkthrough that promised a combat arena would be playing a different game. This one promises that if you can click, hold, and read, you can finish Dissolution of My Self. The rest is whether you can sit with Hector and Matvey without needing them to become healthy. They will not. The FAQ already said there are no healthy, normal romantic relationships in this story.
When you are ready to name the furniture instead of the feelings, the objects list is the next tab. When you are ready to name the people, open Characters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is there a required click order in Dissolution of My Self?
No required order for a different ending. Order changes pacing and how Hector talks. Use room objects to avoid leaving a hotspot unspent.
What should I do if I get stuck?
Use a mouse, try hold/drag/wipe, and check whether the object already blurred. Mini-game hints were added after Next Fest. See how to play.
Should I take the pills on a first run?
Either choice is valid. Pick one and commit so the voice stays coherent. Compare both on pills and choices.
Does this walkthrough cover the demo or the full game?
The loop is the same. The demo guide flags length and missing late-game material. Full playthrough videos were discouraged until mid-September 2026.
