Dissolution of My Self Content Warnings
The Steam descriptors are not flavor text. Read them before you click the first bottle.
Dissolution of My Self is a short game with a long list of reasons to pause. Pop Elephant Studio published the descriptors on the Steam store. The Before You Buy FAQ adds social rules: mark spoilers, do not treat Hector’s rants as the author’s views, and do not play this as commute theater even though it is not an eroge. This page collects those warnings in one place so you can leave for $0 after the demo instead of refunding 1.0 in anger.
If you only wanted controls, go back to how to play. If you wanted a buy/no-buy checklist, use Before You Buy.
What Steam lists
The mature content notes name:
- Self-harm
- Psychological manipulation
- Transgressive intimacy between relatives
- Regression
- Violence
- Substance misuse
- Visceral / physiological descriptions
- Themes of trauma and exile
Later sequences use strong screen shake. Players with photosensitive conditions should take care. That is not a “flashing lights optional” toggle in the FAQ. Plan a break. Sit farther from the monitor. This wiki will not invent a hidden accessibility slider that the studio has not announced.
Ratings generated for storefronts include 16+ bands in some regions with descriptors around violence, sensitive themes, suicide, alcohol/tobacco, and sexual implication. Treat those as extra signal, not a second story.
The relationship is the horror
Official copy stacks roles until the stack is the point: uncle and nephew, sovereign and subject, caretaker and patient, “mommy” and manchild. The FAQ says they really are uncle and nephew. It also says the studio does not think healthy, normal romantic relationships exist in this work. Hector and Matvey stay on public bios. They do not sand the descriptors down.
If you came for a fluffy BL with a save-him route, you will not find it. If you came for psychological horror about dependence, you are in the right apartment. The review is the audience page. This page is the “stop now” page.
Pills, substances, and presentation
Medicine bottles are a core hotspot. Two Steam achievements are named Take pills on time and Give up treatment. Those are presentation forks, not a clean/good ending split. Substance misuse sits in the descriptor list because the bottle is not a joke item. Read pills and choices if you intend to play; skip it if the topic itself is the reason you should not buy.
Motion, sound, and public space
- Screen shake in later sequences.
- Full Japanese voice acting even if you read English text. Volume can be split per character after demo 1.0.8. Replay exists. See voice cast.
- The studio still advises against playing in public. Headphones do not make a rented-room tyranny into café content.
- Mini-games and gesture inputs (drag, wipe, hold) can stall. Frustration is not the same as a jumpscare, but it is still stress. Demo changelog lists the stuck-gesture fixes.
There are no monsters, no jumpscares, no combat. People still bounce off the game because they expected a closet scare and got a family. That mismatch is a warning too.
Who should skip
Skip if incestuous or transgressive intimacy between relatives is a hard no. Skip if self-harm on the page is a hard no. Skip if you need a healthy romance to finish a visual novel. Skip if screen shake is medically unsafe and you cannot sit it out. Skip if you only have a trackpad and refuse to plug in a mouse—the demo already failed people that way.
Do not skip only because the game is short. Three to four hours is enough time to sit in the room. Do not skip only because there is one ending. The FAQ already closed that door; endings explains what still changes.
How this wiki talks about the story
The studio asked for spoiler warnings and delayed full playthrough uploads until about September 17, 2026. We keep late memories off mechanic pages. We will not paste a shock scene into a warning list to “prove” the descriptors. The Steam text is enough.
If a friend asks whether the game is “that dark,” send them this page and Before You Buy, not a clipped screenshot. Then, if they still want in, send how to play.
