Demo Guide

Dissolution of My Self shipped a free demo long before the September 3, 2026 Steam launch. It appeared during Steam Next Fest, received several public patches, and still exists as a way to test the click-and-forget loop without buying the full 3–4 hour story. This page compares demo and full game, lists the problems testers actually hit, and tells you when to stop demoing and just play the release.

Controls still start on how to play. Patch bullets live on demo changelog.

Where to get it

  • Steam demo (app associated with the main listing 4573760; demo appid 4683580).
  • itch.io page at popelephant.itch.io/dissolution, which also links the Steam store, X, YouTube, Discord, and Instagram.

itch.io currently presents as an HTML5 / downloadable demo rather than the full commercial build. Steam is where you buy the finished game. If a comment says “the developer has not uploaded a game yet,” that is itch.io’s product-page state talking, not a cancellation. The commercial release is the Steam version that launched in September 2026.

How long it takes

Store copy says the demo takes about 30–50 minutes depending on reading speed. itch.io tags the average session as about a half-hour. If you are still inside the apartment after ninety minutes, you are either rereading, stuck on a gesture, or you downloaded something that is no longer just the demo slice.

The full game is advertised at approximately 3–4 hours, shorter for fast readers. Demo players who loved the writing should not expect a 20-hour RPG after checkout. They should expect more memories in the same room.

What the demo is for

  • Confirm that you can live with the subject matter. Content warnings are the same family of self-harm, manipulation, transgressive intimacy, regression, violence, substance misuse, trauma, and exile.
  • Confirm that a mouse works. Trackpad users reported a hard stop on a passport long-press-and-scroll. The developer said the demo required a mouse.
  • Confirm that you like object investigation more than combat. There is no combat to unlock later.
  • Confirm that Japanese voices plus your chosen text language feel right.

If any of those four checks fail, you can leave for $0. That is the demo doing its job. The review is the paid-game tone check; the demo is the mechanical one.

Problems that were real, not skill issues

Public patch notes and comments mention:

  • Drag / wipe / hold getting stuck.
  • Save, Load, and Settings looking clickable during dialogue.
  • Fullscreen not applying, or volume adjustment in fullscreen snapping back to windowed with a blank resolution list.
  • Crash when loading save data (fixed in 1.0.8).
  • Uneven voice volume; later split into character voice volume.
  • Profile line-break display issues.
  • Mini-games that needed extra hints.
  • Font effects that some players found hard to read; the developer said they would think about a toggle.

If your demo matches those bugs, update the build before you write the game off. If your full game still matches them after launch patches, check updates.

What the demo will not tell you

The demo will not settle the ending debate. The full game still has one ending. It will not show you every achievement. Steam lists ten on the live product. It will not replace Hector and Matvey character pages; those draw from store bios plus demo impressions.

Full playthrough uploads were discouraged until about two weeks after launch. Demo streams such as Féileacán Cú’s English session are fair first-looks. A complete credits video during the first fortnight was against the studio’s request. This wiki’s embedded videos follow that split: early investigation, not a finale dump.

Should you buy after the demo?

Buy if you want more of the same loop with a longer dissolution. Do not buy if you were waiting for a battle system, a dating sim with a healthy route, or a puzzle box with three finales. Launch price was $5.99 with 10% off for two weeks. System requirements are tiny. The cost is emotional, not hardware.

If you already own the full game, you can skip this page and go to the walkthrough. Keep the demo only if you want a shorter file to test settings. The rented room does not become kinder in the paid build. It becomes more complete.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is the Dissolution of My Self demo still available after launch?

Yes. Steam and itch.io still list a free demo. The paid game is the Steam 1.0 release from September 2026. See launch notes.

Why did the passport puzzle not work?

Demo testers needed a mouse for long-press and scroll. Try a mouse before assuming the hotspot is broken. How to play lists gestures.

Does the demo include the full ending?

Treat it as a slice. The full story is 3–4 hours. Ending rules for the release are on endings.
